A colonial heritage site, Villa de Leyva is considered one of the most beautiful colonial towns in Colombia. It feels as if it has been frozen in time. Founded in 1572 by the Spanish and declared a national monument in 1954, the town was one of the last strongholds of Spanish colonization, as reflected in its traditional architecture—whitewashed buildings, cobblestone streets, and its majestic Plaza Mayor, the largest in Colombia.
